Women of Faith weekend: What a blessed experience!

This past weekend I had a wonderful experience with thousands of women at the Women of Faith event at the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida.  Our group had 49 fabulous women in attendance.  We laughed and cried, sang and danced together through a day and a half of inspiration, Bible truths, heart rending personal experiences and comic relief. 

We had a spectacular "slumber party" at the Courtyard at Lake Lucerne.  The gardens and grounds were beautiful and peaceful.  The staff couldn't have been more accommodating and we were able to enjoy the very interesting music from one of the afternoon weddings taking place on the grounds. 

Nothing could compare to the music of Sandi Patty, Amy Grant, Mandisa and the worship team of the Women of Faith organization.  I had never heard Amy Grant in person before.  I had never heard of Mandisa.  (I'm probably the only person in America who hasn't!)  I had heard and seen Sandi Patty many times before but her voice gets better and better as she gracefully ages.  All of the music was amazing! 

All those in attendance were moved by the life story of Brenda Warner, laughed uncontrollably at Andy Andrews and Patsy Clairmont, were inspired by Marilyn Meberg's "Think, Believe, Do!" and Elisa Morgan's, "What if we all did what we could?"

"Ballet Magnificat" was the crowning glory of the weekend.  Through interpretive dance they told the "Good news of Jesus Christ!"

I'm not sure how it could have been any better!  I am so looking forward to attending again next year.  I was so inspired I signed up to co-lead a group of 75 next year! 

We already know some of the speakers for next year:  Max Lucado, Sheila Walsh, Priscilla Shirer, Third Day, Lysa TerKeurst, Christine Caine, Patsy Clairmont and many more to be announced! 

I can't wait to write my "Women of Faith" story!  I know this is only the beginning.

A Blessing in Numbers, A Blessing of Fellowship!

Our Pastor's wife, Crystal, sent an email to everyone for whom she had email addresses regarding the "Women of Faith" event in October, near our home, in Orlando, Florida.  The response has been amazing!

I have heard about the "Women of Faith" events for many years but have never had the opportunity to attend.  I can hardly wait!  Some of my favorite speakers and singers and performers will be there:  Andy Andrews, Sandi Patty, Amy Grant, Mandisa, Patsy Clairmont, Marilyn Meberg, Brenda Warner, Ballet Magnificent.....

The line up is fabulous! 

When the email went out we thought 30 women would be a good "stretch" goal.  We are currently at 37 women and counting!  What a blessing for our church, our community and our relationships!  There is no telling what will happen when 40 women get together "in the spirit!"  I predict changed lives and a changed spiritual community! 

I recently read the very short, very powerful book by Andy Andrews, "The Butterfly Effect."  Though short, the book was extremely powerful!  Andy's message is that everything we do matters.  If you haven't read it I highly recommend it.  It's about a 15 to 20 minute read that can change lives. 

I am so much looking forward to the fellowship of my sisters in Christ!  I'm looking forward to the speakers and entertainers and mostly, I'm looking forward to being with thousands of like minded women!

Praise the Lord....if you are in the correct building and you mop the floor after the service!

Do you attend a church with multiple services in more than one location?  If so, are all the locations treated equally as a sanctuary where members worship God together?  Does your church welcome anyone who desires to worship God as a family in whatever manner suits their tastes? 

I have filled many leadership positions for my church and consider it an honor to Glorify God with my imperfect service.  If anyone bothered to ask me about my preferred form of worship it would be something akin to "black gospel" with great rhythm and subtle movement with reverence and grace.  I love the old southern gospels with an African American flare.  It's my favorite form of music of all time.

Please don't misinterpret me.  I love the old Baptist and Methodist Hymns and the new contemporary praise music!  I love, love Sandi Patti and Larnelle Harris and Amy Grant and Lynda Randle, Michael W. Smith and most of all the Gaither Vocal Band.  I love movie show tunes, opera, ragtime, big band and disco.  I could watch and listen to the Eagles for hours. 

My biggest regret in life is that God did not see fit to give me a great singing voice!  I love to sing God's Praises!  Unfortunately, I do not sing well but I do sing loudly!  Didn't God say, "Make a joyful noise!?"  That's what I do....I make a joyful noise and I move much as I am worshiping. 

It must be a family trait.  On a recent visit to my brother Joe's I noticed he was quite animated in the choir.  Everyone else was very properly still but Joe was bouncing and swaying to the music!  I always try to sit in the back of the room so I'm not quite so obvious.  I just can't help moving and swaying to the music. 

That brings me back to my first paragraph....do you attend a church where the congregation honors all forms of worship.  Do you worship in the "correct" building or is there an acceptable sanctuary and a separate and inferior building where members who worship in a "traditional" manner are right and everyone else is simply tolerated?  I am very, very happy to be part of a church where everyone and every form of worship is welcome?

Occasionally, we are all gathered together in one place to sing, pray, read the Bible and Praise the Lord together.  I love those occasions!  I love my "hugging" congregation and I love the Lord God Almighty!  Thank you all my life long friends who invited me to join you at this "Church on Fire to serve generations with Christ's Passionate Love! 

Women of Faith Event in Orlando - October 12 & 13

I have been hearing about "Women of Faith" from friends and family for many years.  I have heard only rave reviews for the organization, the speakers, the musicians, the entire experience!  I have always been a little envious of those who have had the opportunity to enjoy this potentially life changing event.  Now "Women of Faith" will be in Orlando in October and I do not intend to miss it!

I received an email with a personal invitation to attend and perhaps you did too.  We are planning to attend as a group and there will be a link to register with our group soon.  There is a group discount so be sure to wait for the link before registering.

Mandisa - She's come a long way from singing in her bathroom with a curling iron "microphone"! The former American Idol finalist survived childhood abuse and an eating addiction to become one of the most promising new talents in the Christian music industry. She's been nominated for a Dove Award and TWO Grammy Awards (so far!)—and we expect more to follow. These days she sings with a carefree confidence about feeling more alive than ever. Through good times and bad, Mandisa has learned that God "can bring us out of whatever we're going through and even use it for good, and for His glory." She lives in Tennessee

Sandi Patty - You're probably familiar with Sandi's magnificent voice. You may know she's a Gospel Music Hall of Fame inductee with 39 Dove Awards, five Grammy Awards, and an armload of platinum and gold albums. But did you know she spent much of the last year performing with symphony orchestras across the country—when she wasn't at Women of Faith events, of course—including a concert at Carnegie Hall? Or that she's such a die-hard Indianapolis Colts fan she refuses to sing the National Anthem at their games? ("They lost every time I sang," Sandi mourns. "I love them too much to risk it again.") Sandi, her husband, Don, and their younger children (they have a total of eight) live in Oklahoma.

Andy Andrews - Andy is an internationally known speaker and novelist whose works have sold millions of copies worldwide. Andy lived a relatively normal life until the age of nineteen, when both his parents died—and he found himself literally homeless, sleeping under a pier or in some one's garage. Then he asked the question that would ultimately affect millions of people. "Is life just a lottery ticket, or are there choices one can make to direct his future?" Andy has spoken at the request of four different U.S. Presidents and works with people from all walks of life, including the military. He lives in Alabama, with his wife, Polly, and their two sons.

Patsy Clairmont - Every year women go home to regale their friends and family with the latest "Patsy story" and we expect this weekend will be no different. Patsy has a poet's gift for making words dance as she shares her adventures and God's overwhelming love. Who'd have thought the teenage runaway who spent later years housebound with agoraphobia would grow into the gifted communicator and best-selling author you see and read today? (Certainly not Patsy herself!) A proud mama of two boys and "nana" to two more, Patsy and husband Les live in Tennessee

Amy Grant - No description necessary!

Marilyn Meberg - At first glance, you might think Marilyn was a serious, wise, well-educated counselor. (And you'd be right!) But she's also prone to break into giggles at the slightest provocation and tell stories you'll still be laughing over years from now. With the weight of not one, but two Masters' degrees behind her, Marilyn tackles the most difficult subjects with aplomb. Her biblically-based brand of common sense and good humor is cherished by women across the continent. Marilyn claims California as home but has been on what she calls an "extended visit" to Texas since 2005.

I can hardly wait for October.  The event begins on Friday evening at the Amway Center at 7:00 until 10:00.  Then on Saturday morning we begin again at 9:00 until 5:00.  There is a prepaid lunch available for $10.00.  (The menu is posted on the website.) 

We are hoping to have at least 30 women join us for this fantastic event so spread the word!  I'll post again as soon as our group is set up and we have our group link.

Count Your Blessings, Name Them One By One!

Tomorrow my church, Tavares First United Methodist, celebrates our annual "Grassroots Sunday." 

This is a time of reflection and looking forward, celebrating victories and hashing over what we may have done better, enjoying fellowship, patriotic songs, praise songs and great food. 

We informally join in one service, one Body of Christ, one in Spirit,  in our activities center to thank God for the many, many blessings we have enjoyed this past year.  We also use this time to map out what we would like to accomplish in the coming year. 

My part in the program is to enumerate our blessings for the congregation.  When I began to list the good things we have enjoyed this past year I was totally amazed at how fast and how many blessings i could recall.  I know I haven't thought of, or are even aware of, all the blessings God has bestowed on us.  All I can do is start with what I know and hope the congregations can "shout out" what I have over looked. 

We are going to follow our service with a "dinner on the grounds."  Randy Stiles will be grilling burgers and hot dogs (provided by the church and a very generous donor) and our very gifted congregation will bring side dishes.  There will be all the usual condiments:  tomatoes, lettuce, onions, relish, mustard and ketchup.  The tables are set, the praise band is ready, the preacher is inspired and watermelons are chillin'.  I can't imagine anything better! 

I hope what we do tomorrow will Honor God and make our congregation happy!  I am so looking forward to the day!

James is still needling me! One Day at a Time!

I loved the Beth Moore study of the Book of James.  I have posted it about it before.  I also hated the study of the Book of James because it's convicting!  It's not easy looking inward and finding you are not where you ought to be....in your own opinion.  I'm sure I'm right where God intends me to be but I, being human, think God needs my help with this one.

Now my Tuesday morning prayer group is studying James.  So I have another opportunity to beat myself up over my failings.  My tongue is still wagging, but not as bad as before.  My ability to keep straight what I have to do and stay focused is better but still needs improvement.  Leading by example is my greatest challenge currently.

Many of our group have been out of town so we have taken a little break for about four weeks.  We shall resume our meetings this week and begin with the first chapter of James.  Thankfully it isn't my turn to lead but my Bible seems to weigh about 2500 pounds.  I know I'll do better and be better once I start reading again.  I am reminded of the chorus one of my favorites:

One day at a time sweet Jesus
That's all I'm asking from you.
Just give me the strength
To do everyday what I have to do.
Yesterday's gone sweet Jesus
And tomorrow may never be mine.
Lord help me today, show me the way
One day at a time.

I love that song and may have to make it my motto! 

It's a beautiful thing to awaken to another promising day to honor God by at least trying! 

Straight Shootin' James

My last post was some time ago.  I'm not proud I have not kept up with my commitment to post once per week but I'm not going to beat myself up. Instead I'm going to begin again with a new attitude. 

I'm currently in the middle of a Beth Moore Bible Study entitled, "James, Mercy Triumphs."  I was very excited to sign up to participate in the study as I love any Beth Moore Bible studies.  I hadn't read James.  OMG....I couldn't believe the book of James was the source of all those Bible quotes that were so familiar to me. 

"Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds."  James 1:2 

Are you like me?  You must "vent" by telling everyone how you have been wronged and it just isn't fair!

"My dear brothers, "take note of this:  Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to anger."  James 1:19

Good grief!  James obviously never drove a car on Florida highways during the winter! 

What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds."  James 2:14

How many times have I complained about having to spend so much time setting up, cleaning up, planning and executing events at church?  That privelege should have been "pure joy."

Adding up all these verses goes back to my last few (distant) posts.  Controlling our tongues and subsequently our attitudes, is imperative.  Self control is a Godly concept and we humans are, for the most part, miserable failures. 

I attend a weekly prayer group where we often discuss our "lack of faith."  I don't identify with that, as faith is my spiritual gift, but I understand it is a challenge for many and I try not to judge.  I have great faith and very few doubts. 

My tongue is my thorn in the side.  Even when I'm speaking of the challenge of keeping control of my mouth I find myself giving examples by complaining about folks with whom I disagree. 

I'm on my knees often these days asking for forgiveness of my weaknesses and pleading for help and guidance with my mouth in the future. 

Kneeling is also not a bad thing.  The more I study, pray and ask forgiveness, the more I mature as a Christian.  I have a long way to go but I am determined to grow everyday in Christ.  The study of the book of James is a huge asset for those wishing to mature. 

Who will join me in practicing self control?  I have joined Weight Watchers Online, I have committed to exercise and drink more water and I am trusting God to guide me in my Christian walk.  That tongue is still a problem but I'm confident my God can help me with that too!   

My Tongue is....Well.....Better!

Okay, I know I'm late posting on the progress I've made with my tongue but I have plenty of excuses:  I have been out of town, I have been busy, I have been not as well as usual, I've had writer's block, I am ashamed to admit I have gossiped in the last couple of months, etc., etc.,  All of the above apply but I'll admit the most accurate is I have not been focused.  One of my issues is developing a "Daily Method of Operation" that will allow me to accomplish all I have to do and want to do each day.  In other words, DISCIPLINE! 

On the subject of gossip and controlling my tongue, I can truthfully say I have made progress.  I no longer "mindlessly" talk about people in a negative manner.  I'm at least aware when I have made an unnecessary comment.  Also, since I challenged myself to "control my tongue" I am happy to report I have a more kindly, tolerant attitude toward many of those I used to rail against.  Amazingly, I can see both sides of an issue more easily and more clearly most of the time.

How about you?  Do you do what you need to do or want to do each day?  Do you have a plan to accomplish what you intend?  Do you work your plan? 

I have to say I have a very detailed calendar for every day of the week.  Some of the activities I have scheduled for myself are Bible study, Juice Plus activities, partnership activities, personal growth, exercise, Rotary, office work, cooking and gardening.  I make very elaborate plans for each day of the week and I make an effort to keep track of what I actually do.  I may as well just tie myself to an old fashion scrub board and jump up and down. 

What deters me from keeping to my plan?   LIFE!  The phone rings, the doorbell sounds, the bugs are eating my vegetables, the mailman brings an urgent, act now message, the grand kids need my help, the church needs me to advertise something, the family business needs attention. 

Obviously, the Bible has all the answers we need.  Just read Proverbs and be convicted of any number of self absorbed issues.  Proverbs contains reprimands, wisdom, encouragement and guidance.  If we follow the advice of Proverbs we shall all lead a very productive, fulfilling life. 

Another really good book supporting the Bible's admonishments is:  "The Four Agreements".....that is:  1.  Be Impeccable With Your Word; 2.  Don't Take Anything Personally; 3.  Never Make Assumptions; 4.  Always Do Your Best! 

Sooooo.....my challenge this month (November) is to develop a daily method of operation and stick to it.  I mean stick to it through all the challenges life presents.  My goal is to adjust when I need to, discard the urge to beat up myself when I don't do everything on the list but stick to it as closely as possible. 

Oh yeah, I also challenge myself to continue to "watch my tongue!"  God willing I'll have a good report at the end of the month!  How about you?

Love God, Love Each Other....Watch Your Tongue!

The title sums up the Ten Commandments very nicely.  If we do these two all the other commandments are automatically observed.  Sounds easy enough doesn't it? 

I'm going to confess it, "loving each other" is not always easy for me.   It isn't that I don't like some people and wish them harm.  I seriously can't think of anyone I truly dislike.  It's just that some people really get on my last nerve.  I find when folks do things I think should be done differently or should be done at a different time it is completely necessary to let everyone I know hear about it.  Am I alone here?   Am I the only one who fights this battle of the tongue and heart?  Mostly it's my unruly tongue.  I truly, in my heart, love most folks. 

God's command to love each other should be the simplest thing we do in life and I'm pretty sure most of us struggle in this area.  I know that because I talk to many people during the course of any given week.  I know that wherever two or more are gathered....there will be gossip!  I'm can wag my tongue with the best of them too.  Soooooo....how do we all change our ways? 

I'm thinking getting control of our hearts is less of an issue but that TONGUE....that's another thing entirely.  Maybe practice truly does make perfect.  How about a 21 day program of practicing keeping my ugly thoughts to myself and when I feel the urge to utter something negative I simply say something positive instead.  OR say nothing at all.  After all, if I don't really mean it maybe it's just better to remain silent. 

Starting today I promise to do my best to catch myself when I am tempted to gossip.  Starting today I promise to try to see the other side of any question.  Starting today I promise to practice holding my tongue.  At the end of 21 days we'll see how I did.  (Let's meet back here on September 26 and determine how successful this little experiment has been!)

Get thy financial house in order!

Is there any subject more "in the news" today than finances?  The countries financial house is in disarray.  Most states, counties and municipalities are not much better.  Seems every day there is a new crisis that requires more borrowing or spending. 

Then there are individuals like me.  My past habits of impulse buying "stuff" caught up with me years ago.  Fortunately, I realized I had an issue with spending and did something about it.  (Something congress hasn't learned!)  I am still not completely cured but I have learned to really think about a purchase before I just whip out a credit card.  For one thing I stopped using credit cards and began using cash or my debit card. 

I was inspired to get control of my spending, get on a budget and start paying off debt by the financial radio personality, Dave Ramsey.  I began listening to his radio show many years ago and found him to be an amazingly frank, to the point, straight shooter.  What an inspiration he is to so many millions of listeners. 

My finances are certainly not where they need to be but I'm getting there by working Dave's "Baby Steps."  While continuing to work on my issues with money, spending and saving, I was sure I was hearing a call to help others do the same.  "Me Lord?  Really?  I mean I'm working on it but at present my life is a mess!  Me?  Really?

So I am coordinating Dave Ramsey's money course, "Financial Peace University."  My church, Tavares First United Methodist, is offering the course beginning on the evening of September 11, 2011.  We are nicknaming the course, "Let Freedom Ring."  To register for the class call the church office 352-343-2761 or go to www.daveramsey.com and click on "classes" then "Financial Peace University," then "find a class."  Use the Tavares zip code (32778) and then click on continue and then "register."  You can buy the membership kit from the church (at a discount) on the first evening of the class.  The class is already filling up! 

It is the tenth anniversary of the attacks on our country and Tavares First is holding a prayer vigil beginning on September 10th at 8:00 am and continuing for 24 hours and ending just prior to the time when the attacks began.  Please join us anytime for the prayer vigil in the sanctuary.  Stay all night, all day, a few hours or a few minutes.  We'll be praying for our country, our leaders and ourselves.  Even if you can't join us physically you can join us in prayer. 

What a team! Wha a team!

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 ESV     
Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

It's been a labor of love and excellent teamwork!  I don't think any member of the Communications Team would say they didn't enjoy it.  Our new website has taken a few meetings, a conference call, too many phone calls and emails to mention and finally, finally we are ready for the big reveal!!!

It's a huge decision to make a change to the look and function of a church's website.  It is not something we undertook without prayer and request for guidance from the Holy Spirit.  The website is, after all, a ministry. 

The website is where you can find the calendar for all the goings on both on campus and on the Internet.  You can double check your schedule for meetings and Bible study.  If your choir practice has been cancelled or changed you'll find the answers right their on the "Music Ministry" page.  Need encouragement?  Read one of the blogs on the "Links" page.  Looking for a good Christian education for your young children?  Click on the "Children's Enrichment Center" link and find the class schedule, enrollment forms, hours of operation and contact information.

No matter how you feel about this technology it's difficult to deny the impact it's had on all our lives.  Our good and faithful servant, John Adams, has been administering a "tape" ministry for many years for our church members who are unable to attend services.  (Yes, I'm talking cassette tapes!)  This has been a much needed and vital ministry for those who want to listen to the Word of God from our pastor but, due to  health problems, can't physically join us.  It has taken much effort and discipline to keep up with this ministry week after week.  Without the cassette tape technology (many years ago), our shut in members would have been denied access to the Word.

What would happen if those same ailing members could be "with us" in the sanctuary, watching Pastor John explain his "Mission Possible" series live on their own TV in their living room?  We're not there yet but we are working toward live streaming of the Sunday morning sermons and worship service.  Until the day we are ready for live streaming we are grateful the cassette tapes John faithfully delivers.

We chose a new look for our website.  We hope you like our new softer colors, curvy lines and easy navigation of our ministries, calendar, Pastor John's messages, the newsletter and events.  That new logo is not bad either.  Right?

It's been an amazing effort with a great Communications Team and the expertise and guidance of Kevin Robson.  We are happy with the result and pray you like it too.  What a team, what a team!!

I loved this story because it happened to me about a year ago.  My very short story is at the end.  Enjoy!

Pay It Forward

This story is true and it happened to me..

One day after work, I asked my husband to pull into a local store so I could buy some cards and some gifts for our nieces.I got into line to check out behind a man dressed in a suit. I didn't pay much attention but then the woman in front of him started asking directions and he politely gave her all the directions. What caught my attention is that twice he said either God bless you or you have a blessed day.As a Christian, I thought - how refreshing to hear. It was now his turn to check out and he just had a gift bag and a card and tissue and some other small things, buying to wrap someone a gift.But, it seemed he didn't have much cash on him. So he told the cashier to check him out and he'd pay cash for part and part on a credit card. When she checked him out he was a little less than a dollar short and started to scan his credit card. "Stop" I said, "Don't scan your credit card for that dollar" and so I handed the cashier a dollar. He looked over at me and I said "no, it's nothing - I'm just trying to get out of debt and I hate to see anyone using a card for anything." He thanked me and "blessed" me too.

The cashier was surprised. I'm not sure if she was surprised because I did that or because she didn't expect me to help him or if it was because he was in a very nice suit and I was there in jeans and a t-shirt - I'm not sure, but when she gave the little change back from my dollar, she held my hand and told me that that was so unexpected of me and told me that I would be truly blessed for the act I just did. I just smiled and said "well I hope so -I could use some blessings!" So just then she told me my total which was around $6.00. As I reached in my wallet to pay her, a young man behind me said - "Wait! How much was her total?" The cashier told him and he reached in his wallet to pay for mine! I said, "No, you don't need to do that - - mine is much more than what I just dished out to help him." He said no he wanted to pay for mine for what he had just witnessed.

And here all along, I was feeling good by helping someone, but then when he did that, well; it was so unexpected and took me so by surprise. With tears in my eyes, I gave him a hug.I always try to do little things that I can, but have never had anyone do anything like that for me.I was speechless.As I walked to my car just amazed at God's love that had just been shown, I wondered what the cashier must be thinking of what she just witnessed in front of her.I cried when I told my husband because I just felt right there, right then, in a world where there is so much going bad, I witnessed God's love.

I went home that night and blogged about it and challenged anyone reading it to do the same.To do something small for someone else and see the difference it makes in your life as well as theirs.Of course my blog only has a couple of followers, but I had to get this story out! That young gentleman does not know how much he touched my heart by following my example. I'll never forget it.So, why not do something? Pay a toll for the car behind you, offer to pay for someone's item they are checking out, hand a water to someone working on the road, pay for someone's lunch - - it doesn't take much to show the love of God.

About a year ago I was pulling through Dunkin Donuts for a bagel.  When I arrived at the window the teenager handed me the bag with my bagel and my drink.  I held out a
$5.00 bill to pay.  The teenager said, "Oh, the lady in front of you paid your bill."  What a great surprise from a total stranger.  What a blessing for her and for me.  It inspired me to do the same from time to time.  God bless you all!  Rhonda

Rhonda's Living Towers are attracting all kinds of new friends!

I hardly know where to begin.  I was in Tampa at the Primrose School health fair last Saturday, in Tavares at the Tavares Tuesday Market on (of course) Tuesday, St. Cloud for an educational talk to a group of teachers on Wednesday, Kissimmee for a lunch and learn with a different group of teachers on Thursday, Living Towers Farm today for an open house. 

I am both excited and exhausted.  I have met so many nice people and made some really interesting new friends.  You just never know when someone is going to come into your life for a special purpose.   I just can't wait to see how it all works.  I met someone who could become special for friend.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed. 

There are so many people drawn to the tower gardens!  I can't blame them.  I am absolutely in love with them.  It is the easiest gardening I have ever done.  The only problem is, being an avid gardener, I'm always wanting to fiddle with the towers and they really don't need constant attention.  Sooooo....I'm trying to restrain myself.

I had to buy some new roses to keep my gardening hands busy.  I love my new roses too but they have "bitten" me a couple of times already.  I have the scars to prove it.  They are both beautiful and viscious.  I get them at the Tavares Tuesday Market from the "Rose" man.  I have post a picture below of one of them along with new photoes of the towers.

Busy, busy, busy....

How on earth do we all get ourselves into situations where we have more to do than we can possibly fit into our schedule? I'm not the only one. Most of my friends are struggling to juggle activities and responsibilities for church, community service, business and friends.

I am leaving tomorrow for a Juice Plus conference in Long Beach CA and I have no idea how I am going to accomplish all the necessary tasks before I get on that plane.

The Central Florida Dragon Boat Festival is coming up soon and I still have to sign a contract for the catering, send invitations to our VIP guests such as elected officials and write checks to pay for the catering. These are task to be completed today!! First of all the invitations have not been printed yet, I still need to purchase envelopes and buy stamps.

I have to return a box to a company for an unwanted item and that will require standing in line at the post office. I'll try to time that so there are fewer people. When is that exactly?

I haven't given much thought to what clothes I'm taking either. I have checked the weather in Long Beach so I know how to dress but coming up with the correct traveling clothes is always a challenge. And shoes are an entirely different matter!

Okay now to the really, really important part....fingers and toes! I must have a manicure and pedicure before I leave on a trip. My feet need grooming badly. My fingers are not so bad right now but still need attention.

Soooooo...I'll go to the office store for the envelopes while I leave the printer printing the invitations. I'll address the envelopes while my feet are made pretty. I'll go through my closet and choose outfits while I listen to a conference call this afternoon. I'll ask a friend to make the payment and sign the contract for the Dragon Boat catering as she has to contact them anyway for a sponsorship. I'll buy stamps at the post office when I return the package. I'll leave the addressed envelopes for Wayne to stamp and mail tomorrow.

NOW....if I can just get a seat on the plane tomorrow (I fly standby) I'll have had a good couple of days.

Can't wait to consume everything I cooked today!

Okay....here's the run down of what's been cooking: Corn pudding (the Beaumont Inn in Harrodsburg KY recipe), roasted root vegetables, turnip and mustard greens, cornbread stuffing, pistachio dessert, giblet gravy. Brittany is making squash casserole and broccoli souffle'. Britt is making pumpkin pie. Wayne is doing one turkey on the spit and I'm doing another in the oven.

I know it's over kill. We can't possibly eat all that food. I still love Thanksgiving for the food and family. I don't care if we have to give away half the food, it was fun cooking and I always enjoy the feast AND the leftovers. There will be plenty for everyone to take home.

My friend Millie made and delivered a ricotta pie and pizzianas tonight. (Not sure of the spelling but they're wonderful!) Wow! The cookies are fabulous and I can't wait to dig into the ricotta pie. I'm not sure I'm going to share it. I have been looking forward to this rare treat for a long time.

Tomorrow my son and grand kids will be here along with my friend Dee. Others will stop by later in the day and we'll spend some time on the phone with friends and family in other states. I can hardly wait for the day to begin. Right now I'm pooped and need to rest before tackling the birds.

One day down and nothing accomplished toward Thanksgiving dinner!

My last post I mentioned I would start prepping today and guess what? Nothing has been done except the several appointments I had scheduled and now I'm headed to a meeting. That puts me one day behind! I was actually looking forward to my time in the kitchen today. Does anyone else look forward to a day alone (or with someone you love) in the kitchen, lovingly preparing special dishes? I find cooking a time of reflection and meditation...IF...I have the time, the ingredients, the utensils and a good glass of wine!

I am singing in the Christmas cantatta this year with our church choir so I'll be practicing my bass part to the music while I'm in the kitchen. "Singing" is a little strong....it's more like making a "joyful noise!" Anyway, I'll be singing His praises while I cook. And yes, I said bass. Amazingly, I can't reach the alto notes but I fit right in with the bass section.

Soooooo....tomorrow is cornbread and chopped vegetables day. I'll knock that out right after the 6:00 AM prayer breakfast and the 8:00 AM communications committee meeting and the noon girls lunch. Oh well, I did have good intentions!

Looking forward to Thanksgiving!

This is my favorite time of year. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. I love to cook and I love to eat! I am not a good gift buyer so Christmas can create a bit of pressure. Thanksgiving has all the elements I love, including food, family and friends but without the expense and pressure of gifts!

Since learning how to coupon I have even been able to cut down on the expense of the food for Thanksgiving AND I'm growing some of my vegetables. (See post from November 17th.) I can hardly wait to harvest my first squash! I have already begun to cut herbs and lettuce.

Every year I plan to do something different for the menu and, after many complaints, I always revert back to all the family favorites. My family loves: Tootsie's squash casserole, broccoli souffle' and Zellwood creamed corn. (All the recipes are on my recipe blog: http://pages.videojug.com/47-my-southern-table) Of course, there will be the usual turkey and dressing (mine is cornbread) and pumpkin pie along with pecan pie. I am planning to attempt making "Granny's yeast rolls" from my brother Joe's recipe. I'm not really sure about it as I don't normally bake, it takes a long time and there is a pretty good chance the rolls won't "turn out." I am resolved to try though.

I'll start the prepping Monday by chopping and cooking some of the vegetables that go into making the dressing, gravy and other dishes. The trinity (onions, peppers and celery) and mirepoix (celery, onion and carrots) will be on the chopping block. I may not be stocked well enough on butter and chicken stock. Another trip to the store with coupons in hand may be required. Trips to the store seem to be an ongoing process when I begin cooking. I am always grateful Wayne is willing to help. He even cleans the pots and pans and little messes I leave while I'm cooking. I am blessed!

It would be very, very nice if we could all just place life on hold while we prepare for the holiday. Unfortunately, we shall all squeeze in the added duties of Thanksgiving with the appointments, meetings and events we always manage. It's okay...I still love it!

God Bless My Living Tower Garden!

I can't believe it has been so long since I have written and published a page on this blog! Just another example of life getting in the way of my very good intentions.

My latest project is one that is NOT taking much time but is most enjoyable! Have you seen my tower garden? I'm posting pictures so you can see the difference in just one week of growing! Anyone who knows me knows how I love gardening. I can't claim much success with growing vegetables in Florida however. I have tried and failed many times. Flowers and shrubs are no problem. Vegetables have become a huge frustration!

God has chosen to bless me with this new way to grow my vegetables!! It's a hydroponic system grown in vertical towers. The technology isn't new. My brother, Joe, had a hydroponic tomato garden in 1962 as an FFA project. Those tomatoes were wonderful and he made a great deal of money over the summer of his sophomore year selling them. I'm not sure what chemicals and minerals were used back then but I do remember the tomatoes were grown in gravel troughs that were "flushed" several times per day with the liquid solution. (Burleigh Boulevard is now over those troughs.)

The big difference with the living towers is the minerals used in the water are all organic and the materials used in the towers are FDA approved food grade. I love the organic aspect and can't wait to harvest my first squash. I should have some ready next week, just in time for Thanksgiving. I have already been cutting and enjoying the larger leaves of the lettuce.

I added two more units so that I could add eight more plants. I now have 28 plants: yellow squash, zucchini, cherry tomatoes, peppers, bibb lettuce, red romaine, green romaine, green leaf lettuce, dill, basil, purple basil, Thai basil, thyme, chives.

I shall add green beans once some of the lettuce is finished producing. I am going to start seedlings this week and can't wait to harvest them in a several weeks.

I pray over my seedlings as they come forth into the world. I pray over my maturing vegetables and herbs. I thank God for this wonderful gift of technology. Think about it....no weeding, no stooping, no hoeing, no digging! Wow! Gardening surely has changed for the better! Gardening for dummies?

Is Tavares so unusual??

I have asked myself that question numerous times over the years. I am still friends with and meet regularly for lunch with folks I began school with in first grade and graduated with twelve years later. I think maybe that is a very special thing!

I know many people, including my husband, who have zero contact with anyone they knew growing up. That is a very foreign concept to me. I spend time with my friends' parents at the polls during elections, have lunch with them after church on Sundays, attend their birthdays and help them with their funerals. Doesn't everyone? I don't think so. I think our lifelong relationships are unusual and very, very special.

Growing up, Tavares was a sleepy town of about 4000. I'm not sure of the population today but Tavares is now known all over the country and the world through the "Central Florida Dragon Boat Festival" and more recently as America's sea plane city.

The waterfront on Lake Dora in downtown Tavares has been transformed into a wonderful place to visit and be proud of. There is a great new water park for the children, new docks and a new landing strip in the lake for the sea planes, a new train station and great restaurants. The former "Boulware's Drug Store" where we all gathered after school (back in the day) is now the "Copper Heron" restaurant and art gallery. It is owned by former classmate, Sue Smith Squires ('68) and her husband, Bill. Remember the old "pavilion" on Lake Dora? It's being rebuilt! The pavilion is in the planning stages now.

Here is your chance to reconnect with old friends and classmates! It's time for another Tavares High School All Class Reunion! We have people enrolled from graduating classes as early as 1943 all the way to the graduating class of 2012! Some of the members of the website www.thsalum.com are the children and grandchildren of our earliest graduates. My own grandchildren are fourth generation graduates of THS. How great is that?

I hope everyone who missed it last year will make an attempt to join us this year. AND all those who attended last year please come on back. We are not doing another reunion for a few years. Let's make this gathering as special as Tavares!!

I finished in second place! Thanks for all you support and encouragement!

I had a blast writing the recipes and the stories for the food blog. The competition ended Friday night and I was notified today that I finished in second place! I am very happy and excited about that! I would love to have won but ran out of time and recipes at the end. It was fun doing all those posts and I have a good start on a future cookbook? We'll see!

Many of you made recipe contributions and for that you have my eternal gratitude! Some of those recipes I remember from my childhood (Snickerdoodles) and others are more complicated and more recent (Red Fish with Crab and Roasted Red Pepper Sauce) and others are just simple (Thousand Island Dressing). They are all fun and I hope you'll try some of them soon.

I am still posting and editing. The Videojug.com folks have been very nice and helpful during the entire process. They have asked me to try my hand at doing some instructional videos and I'm going to give it a go. I have the camera but I don't know how to edit. I am vowing I shall learn to edit very soon. Now I just need a new dress, new hairdo, new kitchen, new pots and pans.....
